Use your vacation to double down on your habits

Use your vacation to double down on your habits

I’m on vacation this week, but that doesn’t mean I stop the activities that support my well-being.

When you find habits that work for you and support your mental, physical and emotional health, vacation is a time to lean into them vs letting them go. This is your time off, time that is dedicated for self-care so double down and maintain what’s already working for you. Besides, I think we’ve all had the experience of stopping a routine on vacation and then needing to get the momentum going again once we’re back (it’s tough!). Maintaining is much easier than stopping and starting.

Three habits I take with me whether I’m traveling or having a staycation are: my meditation practice, walking, and drinking water (staying hydrated).

Of the three, drinking water can be the most challenging because I’m out of my usual work routine where I keep water next to me and sip throughout the day. To keep this up, I need to make sure I have my water with me while I’m on the go.

After years of meditation practice, my husband and friends know when we travel, I’ll take time in the morning to complete my meditation practice. It doesn’t take long, I’m not missing anything, and I’m starting the day with and for myself. I’m practicing what keeps me connected with myself.

Walking has become part of our mornings on vacation. Taking a leisurely walk in a new location opens the door for curiosity, deep conversation, and exploration. Meditation followed by walking are wonderfully relaxing ways to start the day (whether you’re on vacation or not!).

Here are my 3 tips to maintaining your habits while on vacation:

  1. Plan ahead. If you’re traveling, bring your water bottle, travel mat and walking shoes. Carve out a space for your meditation practice once you arrive.
  2. Share your plans with your travel partners in advance. Let them know you’ll start your day with meditation and you’ll check in with them when you’re done. Invite them to join you in your practice, walk or fitness routine if you want to share this with them.
  3. Have grace. If you practice later than usual because you’re sleeping later or you forget a day, it doesn’t mean it’s a wash for the entire vacation. Plan to pick it up again in the evening or tomorrow morning.

Remember, maintaining your habits to the best of your ability will serve you both on your vacation and when you return. Do the best you can, and treat yourself with compassion and kindness. That’s why you’ve put these habits in place.

With love and gratitude,
Jodh
