3 ways to get a grip on worry

Worry can feel like that irritating itch you just can’t ignore. It starts off small, but the irritation quickly builds, pulling you out of the present. Before you know it, you’re in a thought spiral that, left unchecked, will disrupt anything in its path… sleep, digestion, relationships, rest, work, creativity, etc.

You can gain control over worry.

Here are 3 ways to get ahold of your worry so you can hear the message it has for you, without disrupting your life:

👉 Sip hot water throughout the day. Before you go to bed at night, boil water and pour it into your Hydro Flask or Thermos. In the morning, it will be hot, but drinkable. Keep it next to you and sip on it throughout the day. This keeps you hydrated, which helps balance your emotions, reduces inflammation, and supports healthy digestion. It also soothes your mind and body internally, akin to using a heating pad to soothe sore muscles.

👉 Schedule time in your calendar for daily meditation. Meditation calms your nervous system, and gives you control over your mind. In time, your worries can become less intense, less intrusive, more manageable, and you can return to a feeling of calm more quickly. Try this sound healing meditation with the crystal singing bowls. You can meditate with the singing bowls sitting, or lying down. Simply make yourself comfortable, close your eyes and relax your breath. Allow the sounds of the bowls to wash over and through you, vibrating every cell in your body… replacing worry with healing vibrations… calming and relaxing your body, mind, and spirit.

👉 Schedule time in your calendar for worry. Pick a time of day, maybe after you finish work or after dinner, and schedule in time to worry. When worrisome thoughts come up during the day, firmly tell yourself you will worry about it during worry time, and return your focus to the task at hand. You don’t have to note what you’re going to worry about, mentally set it aside until worry time. Once that time arrives, sit quietly with your breath and see what comes up for you. Use your timer so you don’t run over (this is not a 2 hour appointment!). If you can’t remember what worries came up earlier in the day, that is okay - they must not have been that important. When your timer goes off signaling the end of worry time, take 3 full deep breaths, raise your arms up and give yourself a 1 minute, full body shake out, and move on with your day.
