Woman with ape, happy to be there

Do you ever feel like a ghost moving about your usual places on any given day, on autopilot, somewhat aimlessly or dutifully, feeling a bit malaise or ennui (the French have the words, don’t they?), not feeling purposeful or like you make a difference?

Hunger to exist and to matter are spiritual hungers; hungers that every human has no matter where we come from, how we identify, or what our resources look like.

There’s a simple hack for filling this hunger, no matter what stage you’re on in your journey to achieve fulfillment and success. It involves changing your mind about your relationship to all things important to you. In a moment, I'll tell you how.

There are a wide, wide range of things that are important to you, including:

  • Your passion work
  • What you pine for
  • The hard and easy things on your to-do list that you feel are important to you but keep putting off
  • The people in your life that you want to hold onto
  • The events that fully nourish you and make you joyful
  • A certain way of living that fits you
  • A certain conversation you must have
  • Enough rest

Here’s the hack. It will sound productive, and it’s quite spiritual...

Put what’s important to you in your calendar. Fill it with the important stuff that you’ve been dismissing as luxury, impractical, or for sometime in the future. There is no way that those other things that are keeping you busy, overwhelmed, and exhausted are more important than what fills you to the brim so much that you gain a strong sense of self and energy to move others.

And, it’s okay to not know what fills you. Just schedule what you think is important without any more deliberation, you’ve deliberated enough. I will argue, however, that you actually do know. Put it in your calendar. Things become clearer when you do.

By doing this, you’ll get purposeful and present. If you remain open to it and play with it, you’ll find your spontaneity and sense of curiosity, and it will become a great asset to you. Remember those days when you felt bigger than life? It’s because you followed them.

Urgency around the stuff that you’re so used to handing your entire life over to won’t die quickly. But you’ll get more efficient with your time, and your relationship to them won’t weigh on you as heavily. Because you have your life, you won’t feel so threatened and vulnerable, and that matters a whole lot.
