Letting go

Letting go

I’m taking a few days away this week for quiet reflection in nature so I decided to reshare this story with you. The message is both simple and powerful, especially as we’re transitioning into summer.

There’s a story of a senior monk who was teaching on the importance of letting go, including letting go of the small things. He asked for the strongest monk to come to the front of the class. A young monk with big muscles came to the front of the room. All the students agreed this was the physically strongest among them.

The senior monk asked, “Do you think you can hold up this small glass filled with dry rice, for a certain amount of time?
The young monk scoffed and said, “Of course I can hold that up.”

The teacher filled the glass with dry rice and handed it to the young man instructing him to hold the glass of rice in his outstretched hand.

After five minutes, the young monk’s energy began to shift, and his arm began to shake. Being strong, he endured.
After ten minutes, he shook a little more. Still he held the glass.
Fifteen minutes passed, and beads of sweat began to form on his forehead. His classmates laughed.
After twenty-one minutes, he dropped the glass. It hit the ground and shattered into pieces.

The teacher explained, “This is why it’s very important that we let go of even the small things. The small things can quickly add up to significant weight.”

What do you need to let go of to create space in your life for the blessings of this season? Make the commitment to free yourself from these weights. Use your yoga & meditation practice to support you. Surrender to your practice, and you’ll find that letting go on your mat prepares you to let go off your mat, in your life.

With love,
Jodh
