The most basic ingredient to sustaining your energy

There is a lot we do to try to keep up, energetically speaking. We try to get more sleep and take naps. We consume energy drinks or other stimulants. Even if we don’t know what to do food-wise, we understand at some level that if we overeat, undereat, or eat the wrong food or drink, it messes with our energy. If we stay too long around certain people, it affects our energy. We might even know that our own thoughts impact our energy.

But when you need an energy shift, a shift in thinking, or are feeling uncomfortable, how often does your thought go to your breath? How often do you say to yourself, let me first shift my breath and then see what I need to do next?

 

Our energy - where it first begins - is with our breath.

Breath is the foundation of life, the base upon which everything is built. In yoga, we practice pranayama. Prana means life force. Yama means to gain control, or to reign in. Life force is energy. To focus on anything else first is to put our life force into the hands of external constructs that can only offer something artificial, temporary, and ultimately draining. Our vital life force, and how much we have of it, impacts every part of us, how we project ourselves, how good we feel, how clear we are, and how we experience life. It directly impacts our nervous system, the quality of our thoughts, and how we experience time. 

 

Habitualizing breath as the first place to look when - or better yet, before - you need a shift...

...gives you 24/7 access to your higher sense of self. When you need that part of you, it’s there, and that may be all you'll need. If there’s anything more to be done, your connection to it gives you connection to your inner wisdom, which is a part of the greater Universal Intelligence, so your chances of knowing what to do next is high.
